Zurvan is an Iranian black metal band founded in 2009 with a discography of two albums released. "Gorge of Blood" is their latest offering from 2017 and received numerous neutral and decent reviews.Let's see what Zurvan has to offer.
"Gorge of Blood" is a decent album and quite monotonous in terms of the sound and concept. Zurvan seems to record this album in a "playsafe" environment in which the song structures and the composition are too straightforward. It's like they've been under control of something or maybe they have their own reasons. The arrangement is quite common and normal stuffs that has been heard before which is the main weakness of this album. Instrumentation however are great and they have got the talent to deliver their ideas, in fact they did well all together for this release. It's just that they're somehow have some sort of limitation that constrained their real creative process. The atmosphere are great but they are more suitable for a death metal oriented music rather than black metal.Zurvan's vocalist did a great job though it doesn't go well with black metal but still it's something wicked considering that the entire album is kinda controlled. This album sounded great but in the opposite direction from a black metal perspective, it's not modern but too clean and neat for something dark and evil as we usually expect from a black metal release.
I'd rather define them as an atmospheric/melodic death metal band rather than black metal but who knows what they all really up to? Music is universal and too subjective to just point this and that but in the end this complication will matter and will get back to you like it or not. I really hope Zurvan will have a great opportunity to create and generate their ideas without limitations or boundaries whatsoever in order to be in the league of this super challenging metal scene which is very competitive. "Gorge of Blood is not that good and not that bad, so metal fans out there you might wanna give this album a try and maybe they'll take note of what the fans think?
